FONDA N.Y. — Visit Montgomery has launched a new online resource dedicated to commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and highlighting Montgomery County’s significant role in the American Revolution.
The new “Celebrate America 250 in Montgomery County” landing page serves as a central hub for Revolutionary War history, historic sites, educational resources, and upcoming commemorative events taking place throughout the county.
The page features a detailed timeline of Revolutionary War events connected to Montgomery County and the Mohawk Valley, along with information about local historic sites and attractions that help tell the story of the region’s role in America’s fight for independence.
"America 250 is not only a commemoration of the Revolution; it is also a recognition of how our nation has grown, struggled, and transformed over the past two and a half centuries,” Montgomery County Historian Kelly Yacobucci Farquhar said.
“As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Montgomery County is proud to help preserve and share the stories that shaped our nation,” Montgomery County Executive Pete Vroman said. “Our region played a critical role during the Revolutionary War, and this new platform gives residents and visitors an opportunity to experience that history in meaningful and engaging ways.”
As part of the county’s Road to 250 initiatives, Visit Montgomery is also developing and promoting a variety of history-themed experiences and programs, including free Revolutionary Bus Tours that will guide participants past important Revolutionary War sites across the county.
Additional America 250-themed initiatives include a “Wave of Red, White and Blue” component during the county’s annual Kayak-a-thon, participation in the regional Brews, Bikes and Barges historical bike tour and the upcoming relaunch of the Pastport to History program encouraging exploration of historic sites throughout Montgomery County.
The landing page will also provide information about colonial outreach inventory available for educational and community programming, as well as a community calendar featuring America 250-related events throughout the county.
Historic sites, museums and organizations are encouraged to submit Revolutionary War and America 250-themed events to be featured on the website.
“We are excited to educate not only visitors about the deep history of this community, but residents as well,” Director of Communications and Tourism Morgan McClary said. “It’s another opportunity for people to ‘be a tourist in their own town.’ Many who wouldn’t consider themselves history buffs may be surprised by how interested they become in the stories that have shaped Montgomery County into what it is today.”
